'Supporting People' is a programme that helps adults who need support to live independently. It pays for housing support services that help people aged 16 and over (single people, couples and families) to find, or stay in, their own home. This includes help to: manage money, claim benefits, develop domestic or social skills, and keep safe.

Services include:

  • support workers who help you to stay in your own home by helping with things like managing your money and developing domestic skills
  • sheltered housing for older people
  • supporting housing for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems
  • services for young people (including young parents) and homeless people
  • women's refuges.

How the programme is managed

Supporting People in East Sussex is part of adult social care and works closely with a range of other organisations, including local authorities and the Probation Service. Decisions about funding Supporting People services are taken jointly by all the agencies concerned.

Organisations providing services for Supporting People are paid under contract, which means that factors such as quality and the outcomes achieved can be closely monitored.
