Housing benefit

District and borough councils may pay housing benefit to you if you are on a low income and paying rent to a landlord. This is known as rent allowance or rent rebate. For more information on these services contact the council for your area, or visit their website:

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) website has detailed information on Housing Benefit, and you can print off a claim form:

Rent officers

If you are applying for housing benefit, a rent officer may visit to assess your home. This is to check that the rent you pay is in line with the market value, and that your landlord is not charging too much rent. To find out more visit the Rent Service website.
