Getting a provisional licence
Learner drivers must first apply for a provisional driving licence before they can begin driving or take the theory test at age 17.
You can fill in an application form at your local Post Office, order one online, or apply online on the Directgov website (you'll need your passport and credit card handy). If you get Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate you can apply a year earlier. Read about the minimum age requirements.
Driving lessons
You may choose to be taught to drive by a friend or relative – if so they must be over 21 and have held a full licence for more than three years. It is, however, recommended that you take at least some lessons with a qualified driving instructor.
Driving test
The driving test is divided into a theory and practical test. You must first pass the theory test before you can take the practical. The tests can be expensive so make sure that you and your driving instructor agree that you are ready before applying for the test.
