Learning to drive
Provisional licence
Before you can begin learning to drive you must apply for a provisional driving licence. You can fill in an application form at your local Post Office and, for a fee, your provisional licence will be sent to you. Or you can apply online on the Directgov website. You must be at least 17 years old in order to qualify for a licence.
Driving lessons
You may choose to be taught to drive by a friend or relative – if so they must be over 21 and have held a full licence for more than three years. It is, however, recommended that you take at least some lessons with a qualified driving instructor.
East Sussex County Council provides a course on safe driving for young people.
Driving test
The driving test is divided into a theory and practical test. You must first pass the theory test before you can take the practical. The tests can be expensive so make sure that you and your driving instructor agree that you are ready before applying for the test.
Driving safely
It is very important that before you venture out on the roads you understand the basics of road safety. The following sites will help you to make sure you know how to be a responsible road user.
Driving with a disability
A car can be very liberating for someone who finds it difficult to get around by other means. For information for drivers with disabilities see the links below.
