Why we plan
In the event of a major emergency it is crucial that everyone understands what their role is and what they need to do. This will help us to:
- minimise the effects of an emergency as far as possible
- contain the immediate effects
- preserve essential services
- protect the population and the environment
- restore normality as quickly as possible.
How we plan
Council emergency planning officers research possible emergency scenarios. They liaise closely with key managers and staff from organisations throughout the South East including:
- borough and district councils
- the emergency services – police, fire, ambulance, HM Coastguard
- utilities companies – gas, electricity, water and telephone
- the voluntary sector – for example WRVS, Red Cross, St John Ambulance.
Joint emergency planning is undertaken in the Sussex Resilience Forum (SRF) with all other local emergency responders. Together we train staff and practise combined response to emergencies. From time to time we also carry out emergency planning exercises.
The Council emergency planning team leads in the following areas: fuel shortage, recovering from emergencies, and mass fatalities. Our strategic representative on the SRF Executive is Rupert Clubb.
What we plan for
No two incidents are alike and it is important that emergency plans are flexible. Plans are regularly reviewed, updated and circulated. The plans are available to download on the Emergency plans page.
Additional joint plans will be available soon on the SRF website.
