What you can do to help reduce crime

When it comes to reducing crime and the fear of crime, you can make a big difference. There is much you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property.

Here you will find information on the steps you can take to be better informed and better protected, and on organisations you can contact if you want to do more.

Reduce your chances of becoming a victim

  • Fit window locks – most burglars get in through the window. Locks make it harder for them as the noise of a breaking window might attract attention.
  • Join your Neighbourhood Watch scheme. If there isn’t one in your area, your local police station can tell you how to set up a new group.
  • Consider taking personal safety classes. Some simple hints can help you to keep safe.
  • If you think someone’s acting suspiciously, don’t hesitate to report it. Call the police or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
  • Don’t leave valuable items in your car where they can be seen – you're tempting a thief to break in.
  • Alley gating can help reduce the chance of burglars accessing the back of your property. Find out more about alley gating.
