Why I enjoy being a Member of the Youth Cabinet
Hannah Sayers is a Member of the Youth Cabinet (MYC) for Eastbourne Central. She also sits on the UK Youth Parliament, representing Eastbourne.
She was re-elected as an MYC in the Big Vote 2007, having sat on the very first Youth Cabinet, elected in 2006.

How would you describe your job as an MYC?
You are a voice for the young people of the county and you are there to get things done which you think will help them.
What are you most proud of achieving as an MYC?
I’m really proud of getting Eastbourne schools to sign up to the anti-bullying charter. I think the anti-bullying charter is particularly important.
And I’m proud of the work we do at the cabinet meetings and seeing everyone working together.
What are your favourite moments from the past year?
Probably the first time we all got together on a residential trip. We went to Tunbridge Wells, which was really fun.
Also I really enjoy all the Youth Cabinet getting together at the meetings. There’s always a really nice atmosphere.
How do you feel that you’ve made a positive difference to young people in the county as an MYC?
I think we’ve made a very positive impact on the county.
I think we’ve made a very positive impact on the county, but it has been my first year so I can’t expect miracles! But we’ve been meeting lots of people so that they know who we are if they have any issues to raise.
What have you learned from being an MYC, and has it changed you?
I feel a lot more confident now. I feel I can approach all different types of people, from older people to younger people. It’s definitely changed me – I’m more interested in places and people.
Also, through being a part of the Youth Cabinet, I’ve had offers to be on the youth panel for the County Council. So I’ve had other opportunities and people now recognize me.
What do you think are the most important issues for the next year?
I think safety is becoming a very big issue.
