Youth Offending Team

The Youth Offending Team (YOT) brings together workers from children's services, Sussex Police, the probation service, the NHS and the voluntary sector. Our aim is to prevent children and young people aged 10-17 from offending.

What do we do?

When a young person is found guilty of a criminal offence, the court has to decide what sentence to impose and in many cases they ask us to prepare a pre-sentence report to help them make this decision.

In the report we may include information about why the young person offended, personal and home life, educational or employment circumstances and the need to prevent further offending. Our report will advise the court about sentencing options and recommend how best to deal with the young person.

The young people we work with are assessed using the Youth Justice Board standard assessment tool called ASSET which is designed to identify the issues most closely linked with the young person's offending behaviour. This assessment allows us to construct an intervention plan outlining the work to be undertaken during the order.

Preventing youth crime In East Sussex

We have worked with key organisations in East Sussex to develop a strategy to:

  • help prevent children and young people from becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour
  • help change the behaviour of those young people who have offended, and
  • prevent young people from being victims of crime.
