Teenage pregnancy – information for young fathers

I’m going to be a father

Being a young father can be difficult and confusing. You may or may not still be in a relationship with the mother and she may or may not want you to be involved with the baby. If possible talk to your parents but you may also need some extra support. The school will be able put you in touch with someone who will help.

For information on how to apply to have contact with your child, and whether you are expected to pay maintenance, contact your Citizens Advice Bureau.

Will I get into trouble?

This depends on several things. You are much more likely to get into trouble if your girlfriend is under 16 and you are much older than her, or if your girlfriend says that you forced her or tricked her into having sex with you. If your girlfriend is close to your age and you have been with her for some time, you are less likely to get into trouble. The Family Planning Association has a useful page about UK law relating to sexual behaviour.
