Grants for young people – the Youth Opportunity Fund

Latest: the deadline for applications closed on 6 June 2008.

If you live in East Sussex, are aged from 13–19 (or up to 25 if you have special needs) you can apply for grants between £500–£5,000 to pay for summer activities.

What could we do?

The money can be spent on activities for your group over the summer holidays. This can include one-off activities, residential holidays, activities within your local community and activities that last for the whole summer break. For example:

  • you could update buildings, buy or convert a vehicle, or create long-term features like skate ramps or bmx tracks
  • set up a magazine or video project, or a new club at your youth centre
  • arrange short trips, activity holidays, festivals and music workshops.

Your application will be assessed by a funding panel made up of local young people.

Priority will be given to projects that:

  • are based in your local community
  • benefit your local community
  • help you to gain a qualification.

Where do we start?

To receive a grant you will need to complete an application form and meet some simple criteria. You will also need to provide some supporting information. This is explained on the form.

Good preparation helps! Being clear that you have researched your project and thought about how much it will cost will help the funding panel.

The small print

All the do's and don'ts are explained in the 'criteria' and 'conditions' documents below – you should read these before completing your application. Some of the main points are:

Your project must have been completed, and the money spent, by the end of September.

Applications must be supported by an adult from a youth or community organisation, eg youth club, youth group, residents association etc.

This supporting organisation will normally be part of your local council. If it is not, they will need to be affiliated to:

  • East Sussex Council for Voluntary Youth Services, or
  • Sussex Clubs for Young People, or
  • Sussex County Sports Department.

The application form tells you how to get help with affiliation, if you need it.
