Children with a hearing impairment

Where can I get help for my child?

If you feel that your child needs help with a hearing problem, contact your doctor first. They can ask for your child to have hearing tests at a hospital audiology department. The audiologist who examines your child can then ask the Service for Children with Sensory Needs (SCSN) to provide help for your child at school.

What support is available at school?

Educational support will vary depending on the needs of your child. Most children stay in a mainstream school where they can get support from qualified teachers of the deaf, who visit the school every week. However if your child needs greater support than their school can offer they may be given a place at one of the Hearing Support Facilities, where they can receive up to full time teaching depending on their needs.

The Hearing Support Facilities provide special equipment and teaching resources. They are in the following schools:

Special equipment

If your child needs special equipment, including a hearing aid or an FM radio system, their teacher of the deaf will arrange for the equipment to be provided. They will continue to assess your child to make sure they have the right equipment to meet their needs.

If your child's teacher has not provided equipment that you feel your child needs you can contact the Service for Children with Sensory Needs (SCSN) for more information.
