Post adoption letterbox exchange

We believe that it is a basic human right for individuals to have access to information about their family background throughout their life, appropriate to their age and understanding.

What is the letterbox exchange?

This scheme allows children and their birth family to exchange information about themselves, with the Council acting as intermediary. It enables children to grow up with the knowledge that they can find out about their birth family, helping them to build a realistic picture of their own identity.

How will this benefit me?

This information is valuable to the progress of the child, and enables birth parents to have regular updates on the development of the child.

How does it work?

The Council acts as recipient for the letters about the child or birth parents. This information is then passed to the people involved. All letters are forwarded by recorded delivery and the Council maintains confidentiality of all participants.

This agreement is not legally binding unless stated in the adoption order and must be in the best interest of the child.
