Weights and measures

Trading Standards are responsible for inspecting and approving weighing and measuring equipment used for trade. We are required to test and stamp equipment listed in the Weights and Measures Act 1985 and in certain EC Rules. This includes:

• measures of length for use when selling material
• weighing machines for use in shops
• optics, thimbles and glasses for use in pubs, clubs and restaurants
• petrol pumps at filling stations.

We also provide certificates of accuracy for brake testers at MOT stations.
