Animal feed businesses – apply for registration or approval

Who should register?

Businesses involved in the production, use, transportation, storage or marketing of animal feeds must be registered or approved by Trading Standards or another appropriate agency (see document 5 below).

These businesses include:

  • livestock farms
  • arable farms growing crops for feed use
  • companies that transport or store animal feed
  • food manufacturers selling by-products of food production into the feed chain
  • retailers and wholesalers of animal feed (excluding pet food)
  • pharmacists who supply mineral and vitamin supplements for animals.

For a complete list of types of activity requiring registration or approval, see document 4 below.

Are you already registered?

You may have already fulfilled the registration requirement. This would be the case if you are:

  • a food business registered under existing food hygiene legislation, or
  • already registered on one of the schemes listed in the ‘Official Schemes’ document below.

If you are unsure whether or not you need to apply for registration, please contact our duty team.

If you are not already registered, you should complete the registration application form below and send it to Trading Standards without delay.

Registration requirements

To be registered or approved by Trading Standards, businesses must meet specific requirements. These are detailed in documents 1–3 below.

Note: ‘Primary production’ means the production, rearing and growing of basic ingredients including harvesting, milking and farming animals prior to slaughter. It also includes hunting and fishing and the harvesting of wild products.
